MY MISSING RIB
A STORY WRITTEN BY BRIGHT DANIEL
Steve stared at his father just as Adam stared at him too. He averted his eyes to Adam, from there back to his father. “Dad?”
“Yes, son” the father replied.
“Hope you’re not making plans to get me married to a woman of your choice”
“But Celestina should also be your choice!”
“You shouldn’t be asking me this. You should know better than i do because she has been very close to you”
“Dad, the fact that Celestina has been very close to me doesn’t make her a woman after my heart”
“If not her, who else?” the father asked looking at Steve who also stared at him like a man.
“Hum.. Master, let this topic take place tomorrow” Adam interrupted, then Steve stood up and walked out. “Master, have you forgotten so soon what i told you about Celestina and your son?” Mr Stanley looked at Adam in a way that explains: REMIND ME AGAIN.
“Following the philosophy of Naturalism, i told you to allow nature take place in the life of your son and Celestina” Adam reminded him then Mr Stanley remained quiet.
It was dinner time, as all except Adam and the maid assembled around the dining table, Judeson laid on his bed coding the next mountain to climb (a girl to fuck). He wore a white singlet which he tucked in a jean trouser. On his feet were black stocking. He laid in a way he raised one of his legs up and held a cell phone on the ear. “Baby, even the devil knows that your beauty alone can send him to hell. That’s why he keeps running away from you” the girl on the other side of the phone laughed. Then Judeson continued. “Baby, just show me your swag lets see if it corresponds with my cassaver”
“What do you mean by that?” the girl asked.
“Baby, I’m talking about the love we have for each other. The sweet love, you know? So let’s have a test to see if our feelings correspond, understand”
“Yes, baby, you know what I’m talking about” Judeson smiled while the girl giggled.
“Where can this test take place?”
“In my laboratory, baby”
“Where is your laboratory?”
“My room of course, baby” Judeson replied and they laughed.
“You’re too funny. I’ll be there” the girl concluded.
“That’s my baby!” Judeson cut the call just to see his mother standing at the door. She wore a long brownish gown with a sore face.
“Mum, how long have you been standing there?”
“Long enough! Judeson, what have i done to you that since your father left all his wealth for you all you could do is to us it to chest girls up and down. Don’t you want to marry?! Or don’t you want me to carry my own grandchildren?”
“Mum, calm down, the right girl is coming”
“What happened to this one you just called now that you even want to have a test with?” the mother said while Judeson smile. “Better marry oh!” she concluded and went out.
Stella stood besides her sister on the dining table, both facing Steve. Mr and Mrs Stanley could be seen at the other ends of the table. Meanwhile, Celestina had called Mrs Stanley and poured out her feelings.
Steve and Stella occasionally glanced at each other silently.
“Son, Celestina called me” Mrs Stanley began. “She sounded brokenhearted. Did you hurt her emotions?”
Hearing the question, Thelma glanced at Stella while Stella glanced at Steve who reciprocated the eye contact. Adam monitored all that.
“Hum.. mum, i apologised to her. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings” Steve replied then glanced at Stella who suddenly stopped eating.
“But why would you do that son?” the father interfered.
“Like i said, i didn’t mean to hurt her feelings”
“Please, make sure you call and apologise to her” the mother concluded.
“Okay, mum” Steve replied then concentrated. As he wanted to look at Stella, both eyes caught and they averted them instantly.
“My dear, Thelma, why are you not eating?” Mr Stanley mistook Stella to Thelma.
“Oh, I’m eating sir” Stella smiled unwillingly and began to eat.
“Dad, she’s Stella not Thelma” Steve corrected.
“Oh!” the father exclaimed. “I can’t differentiate them” he added and they all giggled.
After the dinner, all had went to their rooms except the maid who was cleaning the table. Stella was changing into a night wear when Steve knocked at the door. She quickly wore it and walked towards the door as Thelma watched her from the bed. She opened the door. “Steve?” she called and glanced back to her sister who averted her eyes from them.
“Please, can i talk to you?” Steve requested.
“Sure” Stella replied. “Come in”
“No, let’s talk outside” Steve said.
Stella looked at the wall clock: 9:05pm and looked at her sister again. “Okay” she replied and followed him out.
Both sat beside the swimming pool silently and occasionally admiring the bright moonlight.
“You have always trusted and believed in me even when you barely know me” Steve broke the silence then Stella glanced at him with a smile. “I’m sorry, i couldn’t save your father” he added.
“Is okay, Thelma told me he’s in the mortuary” Stella said.
“Yes” both remained quiet..
