MY MISSING RIB
A STORY WRITTEN BY BRIGHT DANIEL
The room became quiet after Stella nodded her head positively to Steve’s question. She suddenly averted her eyes from steve and looked at her sister who was busy bringing out the gifts. “You won’t be going with us to Nigeria, Thelma” she said.
“Why?” Thelma became sad staring at her sister. Even Steve became surprise.
“Why are you preventing her from following us?” Steve also asked.
“She will stay behind and complete her education” Stella replied without looking at him.
“No, i disagree!” Thelma objected. She abandoned those gifts and sat on the bed angrily. Then Steve stared at Stella who wasn’t smiling and also looked at Thelma.
“I think your sister is right, Thelma. You can come over to Nigeria immediately you’re through with your education. But i promise you that you’ll be visiting us time to time, okay?” Steve said but Thelma remained quiet. “Or would you like to school in Nigeria?” he added.
“Yes!” Thelma replied instantly then Steve stood up with a smile. He gently sat beside her on the bed with a hand across her shoulder. Stella glanced at both of them from behind without smiling but averted her eyes.
“What level are you?” Steve began.
“In my final year” Thelma replied.
“Listen, if you try to school in Nigeria, you will start from square one by spending a year writing an entrance exam called Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) before entering into the higher institution. So I’ll advice you to just finish the remaining months here and come over to Nigeria. I’ll even give you one of my friends to marry if you so wish” Steve jokingly said while Thelma smiled. Even Stella couldn’t help it.
“I have heard you” Thelma replied.
“Good” Steve disengaged his hand and went outside without looking behind to see Stella who stared at him until he closed the door.
After the lunch which lasted for so long in the resident of Mrs Eric, Judeson’s mother, Judeson took Rose to his room. One could see Rose still giggling at Mrs Eric’s funny behaviors and talk exhibited at the dining table.
“Your mum is so funny!” She said as she sat on a cushion inside the room and gently removed her shoes. Judeson couldn’t believe how free she was. So he moved towards the refrigerator.
“That’s how she does whenever she sees young girls like u” he replied as he came back with a Juice and a glass cup.
“What are you doing with those?” Rose’s face changed.
“Is for you” Judeson stood at a spot staring her.
“Please, go and keep them. Do you want to kill me with food?”
“Holy ghost fire!” Judeson replied then Rose laughed aloud.
“Funny guy, please, go and keep it back before my stomach burst”
“If you say so” Judeson kept the juice back in the refrigerator and sat beside Rose on the cushion in a way he folded one of his legs and place one of his hands on the side-head staring at her quietly.
“What’s it?” Rose stared at him too.
“You look amazing” Judeson replied.
“Thanks” Rose averted her eyes and became quiet. “You too” she added after the long silence.
“Thanks for coming”
“You’re welcome. What are friends for?”
“I feel something more than a friend”
“Excuse me?” Rose stared at him as if she didn’t hear him well.
“Hum.. I said… Hum.. It feels good to be a friend” Judeson replied.
“It’s a lie” Rose smiled.
Judeson held her hands which suddenly quenched the smile. So they looked into each other’s eyes.
“I feel something more than a friend” Judeson began. “It’s right inside my heart, body and soul. If you behold, you’ll see it in my eyes too where the fair of love for you burns every minutes. I love you. Please, don’t reject me” he concluded while Rose remained quiet. He brought his head closer to hers and kissed her gently, yet Rose couldn’t move. She was not only taken over by his words but by the feelings she had for him too.
Justice and Bernard were in Justice boss’s car. Both were glowing with smiles on their faces.
“I told you!” Bernard shouted happily. “The girl is luck herself!”
“I’m telling you!” Justice shouted too but handled the steering wheel carefully. “Faith is a River of luck. Since i met her my life has changed for good!”
“Not only your life oh, it trying to change my own life too because very soon you’ll introduce me as the next driver to your boss”
“That’s right!” they laughed.
Stella met steve sitting outside on a permanent seat made with cement, so she quietly sat beside him. “You’re not okay” she began.
“Why saying that?” Steve glanced at her.
“You’re only covering up the feelings” Stella also glanced at him.
“The feelings of jealousy” Stella stared at him while he averted his eyes from her and suddenly became quiet with his face down. “Steve?” Stella called with a low voice and touched his head in a way Steve stared at her. “Is not what you think, i barely know Megan and nobody can take your place in my heart coz i love you so much” she added then Steve smiled as an afterthought..
