MY MISSING RIB
A STORY WRITTEN BY BRIGHT DANIEL
“Where are you rushing to?” Megan was still inquisitive as he stood beside Stella.
“I have to rush back to the saloon. I forgot my phone there” Stella replied then stretched her head if she would see a taxi.
“Then let me take you there” Megan unlocked his car with a remote thereby indicating a red light. He opened the front door for her and said, “Come in”
Stella glanced at him then entered as an afterthought and they drove off.
Thelma saw them through a window.
Back to Nigeria, Steve never stopped trying the number. As he stood beside the window in his room with the phone still on his ear, he heard his mother’s voice then kept the phone on the bed and went to the sittingroom. He could see his mum shedding tears.
“Mum?” he rushed her. “What’s the problem?” he asked but the mother said nothing. “Mum talk to me!”
Steve left the parlour after the mother refused to respond. He met his father inside his room still with Adam standing before him.
“Dad, mum is crying, why?”
“Young master, please, leave us” Adam said.
“But i need to know what’s going on!” Steve insisted.
“It’s just a misunderstanding that normally takes place in every marriage, please”
Steve stared at both of them steadily for a while then returned to the parlour.
Megan and Stella arrived faster than expected at the saloon just to see it locked.
“Oh, my God!” Stella rushed out from the car. “They’ve closed!”
“How sure are you the cell phone is in there?” Megan asked approaching forward too with the car key jingling in his fingers.
“I left it in one of the drawers after a phone call. And its in silence” Stella replied looking woozy.
“Is okay, you can come back tomorrow to get the phone”
“It’s so difficult for me to wait till then”
“Nothing materially worth to be worried about except your fellow human being especially the ones you love” Megan said staring at her. Stella suddenly calmed down staring at him too for the very statement he made. She began to twist her fingers. Before Megan moved closer to her, the owner of the saloon arrived. She’s fat a bit with a fair body complexion.
“Thank God you came back!” Stella rushed her.
“I temporarily locked the shop. Any problem?” the lady asked.
“It seems like a forgot my cell phone here”
“Oh, sorry for that” the lady opened the shop and the phone was found then Stella smiled. They returned to the car.
“You look more beautiful when you smile” Megan broke the silence as both were heading home.
“Thanks” Stella replied with her eyes fixed on the phone. She couldn’t believe how many miss calls she had from a foreign number. She dialed the number but nobody picked.
“How are your parents?”
“They are late”
“Sorry for that” both remained quiet.
After Mrs Stanley had refused to talk to her son likewise her husband and Adam, Steve went outside by the swimming pool. He stood there for a long time looking at his image that reflected on the pool of water. His head was occupied with many things: Stella, his parents issues and Celestina. He didn’t know what to think, then he exhaled deeply. He stayed they for a long time before going back to his room. Inside the room, he saw Stella’s miss calls, then quickly called back.
In South Africa, right in Stella’s apartment, Thelma had slept already when the call came in. Stella stood up, glanced at the wall clock; 9:50pm and picked the call. She wore a bumshort and a top looking more beautiful on her newly fixed hair. “Hello..” she said with a low voice.
“Stella?” Steve called on the phone then Stella stood up towards the window. She could recognise his voice very well.
“Steve?” she called too.
“Yes my love” Hearing that, Stella smiled, glanced at her sleeping sister and changed the phone to another ear. “I miss you so much” Steve added.
“I miss you more, Steve” Stella became emotional.
“I have never stopped thinking about you”
“I think about you each minute”
“Please, i want u to know that i still love you”
“I love u too but..” a knock at the door interrupted Stella. “Please, excuse me” she said as she moved towards the door.
“Honey, what’s it?” Steve asked but Stella didn’t reply. After some moment of silence, he began to hear males voices on the phone. “Stella? What’s going on?” he asked again as he changed position. Suddenly, he heard Stella screamed in a loud voice then the line went dead. “Stella! Stella! Stella!” he shouted continuously but didn’t hear anything. He tried the number again and a gain but was switched off. “Oh my God, what’s going on?” he wanted to rush out but glanced at the clock: 8:55pm
Thelma could bee seen shouting and crying in the broken apartment which attracted neighbours especially Megan.
“They have taken my sister!” Thelma shouted.
“Who?” Megan asked.
“My God!” Megan exclaimed. “Put yourself together first, Stella” he said holding Thelma.
“I’m not Stella! They’ve taken her away!” Thelma shouted again.
