MY MISSING RIB
A STORY WRITTEN BY BRIGHT DANIEL
Mrs Henry’s resident hadn’t changed: rigid walls with local roof having the image of traditional totem on the four walls. One could see a small television in the sittingroom broadcasting local news. Opposite it was Mrs Henry on a cushion where she sat quietly separating beans on a small rectangular tray. She tied a wrapper on a milky gown. Though, all her concentration was on beans but she listened carefully to the broadcasting news. Suddenly, Faith bagged in exuberantly thereby startling her.
“Faith, you startled me! What is it?!” Mrs Henry asked surprisingly.
“Mother guess what?!” Faith began with great excitement. She carried the tray of beans from her mother’s thighs and placed it on the floor then sat beside her. When the mother saw smiles on her face, she began to smile too. “Mother, Justice proposed to me!” Faith announced.
“Is that so?!” the mother exclaimed.
“And what was your response?”
“I said yes! Look at the engagement ring” Faith stretched her fingers for her mother to see the ring.
“I’m so happy for you my daughter” the mother hugged her.
“Mother, it has not finished oh” Faith began again and adjusted on the seat. “Justice just rented a bigger apartment and he’s doing well”
“I told you. He has a brighter future” the mother concluded. Just then, Celestina also entered exuberantly, so Faith remained quiet with a small trace of smile on her face. Celestina also sat beside her mother and crossed her legs.
“You look happy today, Celestina” the mother began looking at her.
“Yes, mother, because Steve and i are about to get married” Celestina replied.
“That’s good, I’m happy for both of you. But when is he coming to see…”
“Both?” Celestina interrupted with a sore face. “Who are the both?” she asked.
“Your sister, Faith is also getting married to Justice” the mother replied then Faith smiled.
Celestina looked at Faith and said, “Really? So you’ve agreed to marry that wretched guy”
“Shut up!” the mother rebuked her.
“Mother, better warn her! She has started oh” Faith added angrily.
Celestina stood up and adjusted her bag, then looked at Faith disdainfully. “Good luck” she concluded and flung her butt into her room.
“Mother, better warn Celestina! I don’t like what she said” Faith also stood up and walked into her room.
“How can this girl be a problem to me? Celestina!” Mrs Henry carried the tray of beans and angrily walked in too.
Judeson drove into the resident of Mr Stanley. He met Steve arguing with his mother in the sittingroom. One could see Steve boiling in anger as his voice echoed the whole building.
“Why are you and father making things difficult to me?!” Steve shouted looking at his mother who sat quietly on the cushion. “How can you force me to marry Celestina?! I see no reason why i can’t make a choice of my own!”
“Son, you have to listen to your father” the mother gently stood up. “Moreover, Celestina is a good girl”
“I don’t care! Stella is the woman i love, not Celestina and you people should better bring her back here or..!” Steve paused and ran upstairs. Then Judeson looked at Mrs Stanley who said, “Please, talk to your friend”. He nodded his head and ran upstairs too.
Stella and her twin sister had settled down and made Randy, their uncle suffer in jail. One could see their apartment looking beautiful. Though, they were comfortable and okay with the money given to them by Mr Stanley but Stella felt incomplete. She stood at the window holding the protector. She wore a short white skirt that exposed her attractive thighs and white short singlet that exposed her hairy abdomen. The hand of her bra could also be seen on her shoulder. No doubt she was thinking about Steve with tears in her eyes. Suddenly, Thelma, her twin sister entered wearing the same colour of cloth too. “Stella?” she called before Stella turned and began to dry her tears. “How long would you keep shedding tears. I guess is because of Steve again”
Stella ignored her and sat on the bed still drying her tears. Thelma also sat beside her and placed a hand across her shoulder.
“You have to move on, Steve is out of the picture now”
“Not in my heart” Stella began. “I can’t stop thinking about him coz i love him”
“But the parents don’t love us. They don’t want you to marry their son” Thelma opposed.
“I believe Steve will come back to me” Stella consoled herself.
“You mean he will leave Nigeria to South Africa looking for you?”
“Yes” Stella stood up again towards the window then Thelma smiled.
“I don’t think that will happen. I believe Steve is preparing to marry that girl.. Celestina” Hearing that, Stella turned and stared at her sister feeling her heartbeat. “If they aren’t married already, coz i believe that’s why the parents told us to leave Nigeria” Thelma added thereby increasing Stella’s heartbeat.
