THE IRRESISTIBLE URGE
(school in crisis)
Before Olivia could get to Kennedy he had already stood up dusting out dirt from his uniform. Before he went out, he glanced at Peace who stared at him breathing heavily.
“Nawao..” some students exclaimed then departed except Nath who moved closer to Peace and said, “You shouldn’t have done that”
“I wonder!” Olivia added going back to her seat.
“He caused it!” Peace shrieked.
“How did he cause it?” Olivia threw back the question.
“Just let me be!” Peace sat and and rested her head again. Immediately, the bell rang for break over and the first teacher who entered the classroom was Mr Idris, the physics teacher. Seeing him, the students’ heart skipped because he was a strict young man who doesn’t laugh with students. He has an average height, and from his cheek down to his jaw was enough beards. So he placed his hand in his pocket and said, “Submit your assignments. Get your cutlass ready if you know that you’ve not done it coz you’ll be cutting the field while others go home or hostel which after you must have received six strokes of cane”
At that point, Kennedy and Peace glanced at each other angrily. It became a reality to Peace that she must received the full punishment because she had not done her assignment.
After all submitted including Peace, Mr Idris ordered Nath to bring them to his office and he left. There was a rising soliloquy among the students as Nath carried the books but Kennedy followed him instantly while Peace went back to her initial position getting ready for her punishment.
Just at the staircase, Kennedy met Nath and said, “Guy, can i have Peace’s book?” He flung out a pen from his pocket.
“Why bro?” Nath asked surprisingly.
“Just give it to me, please!” Kennedy looked more than serious and began to search the books immediately without waiting for his permission anymore. When he saw a book with the surname ‘Livinus,’ he dragged it out and began to do the assignment for her. Nath became surprise looking at him.
Few minutes before school over, Mr Idris arrived with the books. He had a fat cane in his hand and a paper containing the list of both those that failed the assignment and those that didn’t do it at all. Seeing that, the class became as quiet as a grave yard. Kennedy could see expression of fear in Peace’s face.
After the books were shared, Peace opened hers but couldn’t believe her eyes: she got assignment she never did 100%.
“Ovlia, Olivia” she called.
“What?” Olivia responded.
“Did you do this assignment for me?”
Olivia took a good look at the assignment and shruggled. “No”
“Then who must have done it coz i know i submitted an empty book?”
“Maybe Nath did”
Peace looked at Nath immediately who was totally focused on his own marks. Meanwhile, the flogging had been going on by Mr Idris. The sound of the cane alone can tell how painfully the victims received it which in the process Nath was summoned by Mr Jumbo through a student, so he left.
“Now, follow me to the field for the remaining punishment” Mr Idris said after flogging. Immediately he left, bell was rung for school over and Kennedy went home instantly. Ellen wanted to see Nath before going, so she pretended to get busy in the classroom until he comes back. Even Peace wanted to see him, so she also sat behind. Olivia hung her bag and said, “Let’s go home”
“No, i want to see Nath?” Peace replied.
“Well, I’m going?”
“I’ll be with you later”
After Olivia and other students left, it remained only Peace and Ellen in the classroom. It was known to both of them that they were waiting for the same person but didn’t talk to each other until Peace left her seat to Ellen’s.
“Hi” she said.
“Hey” Ellen glanced at her and concentrated on her book.
“Are you waiting for..”
“No” Ellen interrupted.
“U didn’t even allow me to finish”
Ellen forced out a smile and glanced at her again. “I know you’re talking about Nath” she said.
“How do you know?”
“Well, I’m waiting for him” Peace interrupted. “Can you imaging he did my assignment for me?” she added.
“He did?” Ellen became surprise nearly to be jealous. “It’s good” she added too.
Nath came in, he carried his bag and met the two girls.
“Thank you so much, Nath” Peace said.
“For what?” Nath asked. Meanwhile, Ellen seemed uninterested in their conversation still writing on her book. She was the only one sitting while they stood beside her.
“For helping me with the assignment” Peace replied.
“I didn’t do the assignment” Nath said.
“Then who did?”
“Kennedy did it for you” Peace became quiet staring at him on the face as he continued, “He followed me. Just at the staircase, he requested for your book and did the assignment there”
“Bu.. but.. why did he do that?” Peace stammered.
“It will be better you find out from him by yourself coz i asked the same question but didn’t get a reply” Nath answered then all remained quiet. When the quietness lingered, Peace gently went out..
