THE RETURN OF THE LOVE HUNTERS
(Battle of love)
A STORY WRITTEN BY BRIGHT DANIEL
“You mean we are entering into the darkness?” Jackson was still inquisitive.
“Yes, this road leads to the den of the love hunters” Cassandra replied then moved forward. She stopped and looked back just to see Jackson still standing. “Hey!” she shouted.
“Sorry, I’m behind you” Jackson exhaled deeply looking around. As Cassandra watched him, he opened the car and took a gun. “Now we can proceed” he said.
“You won’t be needing that” Cassandra told him.
“Have you ever seen love hunters?”
“No, just book hunters”
“Have you thought of why you can’t see them?”
The questions were beginning to get scary to Jackson. “Hum.. i think is because love hunters are invisible” he replied.
“Then why are you with a gun?” Cassandra concluded while Jackson felt stupid. “Let’s go” Cassandra turned again followed by Jackson who never bought her idea of keeping the gun behind. The narrow road was surrounded by grasses both left and right. They kept flogging on Cassandra and Jackson’s legs as they moved silently into the darkness. Nothing could be seen ahead of them but darkness, and nothing could be heard but the sound of crickets. The more they moved the darker the place. And the darker place, the narrower the road becomes.
“How on earth do you know this place?” Jackson broke the silence.
“I have seen it even before we came here” Cassandra replied.
“Are you a witch?”
The question made Cassandra to stop staring at Jackson who became worried of such look. “Okay, my bad, sorry, i guess i shouldn’t have asked coz you are already a witch” he added then Cassandra gave a weak smile and continued her journey. Yet, Jackson never stopped talking. “You know, only witches and wizards see spiritually”
“Shut up!” Cassandra rebuked him.
“Sorry, but I’m only using this to drive away the fear and tension in me coz I’m really scared now”
“Quiet!” Cassandra shouted at him again when they couldn’t see the road anymore. “This is the end of the road” she added then Jackson positioned his gun.
“Does it mean we have reached?” he asked.
“No” Cassandra replied. Just then, the book left her hand and hung in the air. At their very eyes, it opened thereby giving out a bright white light and began to flow in the air, into the darkness. Cassandra followed it and signaled Jackson to follow her too. After few minutes of walking, they got to an open place without grasses then the light from the book changed to red, closed and went back to Cassandra’s hand…
Back to the city, Hector dropped Grace right inside her room, on her bed and covered her with a blanket. He began to sing a melodious song for her to get back to sleep.
“What are you doing?!” Grace shouted and scattered the blanket.
“I only want to be good” Hector replied.
“Gush! You are so dramatic” Grace began to change to her war dress. The dress had a black colour-a trousers and a shirt which has a zip in front. Grace zipped up and took two guns. Her legs were also black high-heel shoes.
“Where do you think you are going?” Hector asked.
“Where does it look like I’m going?” Grace threw back the question.
“Woh woh woh, baby you can’t go out there, it’s very dangerous”
Grace looked at him surprisingly and said, “Since when did you start being so nice?”
“You know..” Hector began to scratch his head. “..ever since i offended you. I’m only trying to make up for my bad deeds” Just then, Mrs Vicker, Grace’s mother entered then Hector sped off through the window.
“Who are you talking to? And where are you going to?” the mother asked looking at Grace’s dressing.
“Remain indoor, mum. I’ll be fine” Grace passed her and went outside. Just at the door, she vanished-Hector carried her to where the hunters were many.
“Woh! That was close. Your mum would have..”
“Is not necessary!” Grace interrupted him and began to shoot hunters immediately.
“Yes, is true” Hector sped off to save people. But he suddenly came back to Grace again and said, “Please, be careful my love”
“Fuck you!” Grace replied then he sped off again.
Back in the bush, Cassandra opened the book and started speaking in Kalish. As she spoke, her eyes closed. She spiritually saw a small house at that same spot they were standing. The house was dark and scary. She saw herself moving deep into it as she climbed down a staircase. She could hear people lamenting and crying. A familiar voice came into her ears then she said, “Amaya?” she hastened up. “Amaya! Amaya!” she began to open several rooms. Each room she opened she saw nothing but human skeleton. Before she could go deeper, she woke up physically breathing heaving.
“What happened” Jackson asked.
“I think a heard Amaya’s voice”
Cassandra neglected the question and began to look around the area they stood. “There is a building here” she moved forward.
“Burning? But i can’t see any?”
“I think the building is invincible. Come on, give me your hand” Cassandra held Jackson’s hands…
